How to Explain an Employment Gap on Your CV (2026 Guide)

Have a gap in your work history? Learn exactly how to handle employment gaps on your CV — what to say, what to leave out, and how to stop gaps costing you interviews.

Employment Gaps on a CV: The Truth

Almost everyone has one. A period between jobs — redundancy, illness, caring responsibilities, travel, burnout, a startup that didn't work out. And almost everyone worries it will cost them the interview.

Here's the reality: a gap on a CV is not automatically a red flag. How you handle it is.

Recruiters see gaps every day. A confidently explained gap is far less damaging than an unexplained one, or worse — an awkwardly disguised one that raises more questions than it answers.

What Counts as a Gap?

Generally: any period of 3 months or more between employment that isn't explained by education, freelance work, or another listed activity.

Shorter gaps (under 3 months) rarely need addressing. Most recruiters understand job searches take time.

How to Show a Gap on Your CV

Option 1: Name It Directly

The simplest and most effective approach. List the gap period with an honest description.

Examples:

  • *Career Break (Jan 2025 – Sep 2025) — Caring for a family member*
  • *Sabbatical (Mar 2024 – Dec 2024) — Extended travel and personal development*
  • *Redundancy (Jun 2025 – Sep 2025) — Restructuring at [Company]; actively job searching*

This removes the mystery. Recruiters aren't trying to catch you out — they just want to understand the timeline.

Option 2: Include Productive Activity

If you did anything useful during the gap — freelance projects, volunteering, studying, online certifications — list it like a role.

Example:

`

Freelance Marketing Consultant (Jan 2025 – Present)

• Delivered SEO and content strategy for 3 SME clients

• Google Analytics 4 Certification (Feb 2025)

`

Even a short course demonstrates initiative and keeps your skills current.

Option 3: Use Years Only (Not Months)

If your gap is under a year and spans a calendar year boundary, using year-only dates can legitimise the timeline without drawing attention.

Example: "2024 – 2025" instead of "Nov 2024 – Sep 2025"

This is not dishonest — many CVs use year-only formatting. But don't use this approach for gaps over 12 months; it will be obvious.

Common Gap Reasons and How to Handle Each

Redundancy

Completely normal and carries no stigma. State it plainly.

"Made redundant as part of a company-wide restructuring in January 2026."

Don't try to hide it — recruiters will assume the worst if you do.

Caring Responsibilities

Fully respected by most recruiters. A simple description is enough.

"Career break to care for a parent with a long-term illness (2024–2025)."

Mental Health / Burnout

You are not obliged to disclose this. "Career break for personal health reasons" is entirely sufficient and will be understood without further explanation.

Travel

Treated positively by most employers if you're not entry-level.

"Extended career break: 10-month trip through Southeast Asia and South America, self-funded."

Failed Business or Startup

Increasingly respected. Be straightforward.

"Co-founded [Company] — a B2B SaaS product in the logistics space. The business was wound down in October 2025 after 18 months."

This shows entrepreneurial initiative and honesty.

Job Searching

Totally normal. Don't dress it up.

"Actively seeking a senior marketing role since January 2026 following redundancy."

What NOT to Do

Don't lie about dates. Background checks and LinkedIn histories make date fabrication a real risk. A discovered lie ends an application immediately — and can get you dismissed even after you're hired.

Don't over-explain on the CV. One line is enough. The CV isn't the place for a paragraph of justification. Save the fuller story for the cover letter or interview.

Don't use vague wording that invites suspicion. "Pursuing personal interests" with no detail sounds evasive. Specific always beats vague.

Don't leave it completely blank. A timeline with an unexplained hole makes recruiters fill in the gap with their imagination — usually more negatively than the truth.

Addressing the Gap in Your Cover Letter

If the gap is recent or significant, one sentence in your cover letter handles it cleanly:

"Following a period caring for a family member, I am now fully available and actively looking for my next senior role."

That's it. Direct, confident, moves on.

Does a Gap Affect ATS?

No — ATS doesn't penalise gaps. It doesn't understand timelines emotionally. It scans for keywords and formatting. A well-structured CV with clearly dated entries (including a gap label) will parse correctly.

FixerCV's free ATS checker scans your CV for keyword gaps and formatting issues — none of which are caused by an employment gap itself.
