Software Engineer CV: Examples and Writing Guide (2026)
How to write a software engineer CV that passes ATS and impresses technical hiring managers. Includes examples, skills lists, bullet templates, and what to put in each section.
The Software Engineer CV: What's Different
Software engineering CVs live or die on two things: technical credibility and measurable impact. Hiring managers — often engineers themselves — can spot a vague CV instantly. They want to know exactly what you built, what stack you used, and what it achieved.
Generic bullet points like "Worked on backend systems" or "Contributed to engineering team projects" will get you filtered out, not because you lack experience, but because you haven't communicated it.

Fix My CV FreeSoftware Engineer CV Structure
- Contact details + GitHub/portfolio link
- Personal statement (3–4 lines)
- Skills (technical stack — prominent)
- Work experience (achievement bullets with metrics)
- Projects (personal or open source)
- Education
- Certifications (optional)
Note: For software engineers, Skills often comes before Work Experience — technical stack is the first filter in ATS and in a recruiter's eye.
Personal Statement for Software Engineers
Keep it tight. 3–4 lines covering: stack, years, scale, and what you're looking for.
Example (Mid-level full-stack):
"Full-stack software engineer with 4 years building scalable SaaS products in TypeScript, React, and Node.js. At a Series B fintech, reduced API response times by 67% and led migration from a Rails monolith to a microservices architecture supporting 2M+ users. Seeking a senior engineer role at a product-focused company."
Example (Junior/Graduate):
"Computer Science graduate from the University of Manchester (First Class, 2026) with hands-on experience building production React applications during a 6-month placement at a HealthTech startup. Comfortable across the full stack — React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, AWS. Looking for a junior software engineer role where I can grow in a strong engineering culture."
Technical Skills Section
This is your ATS keyword engine. Structure it by category:
`
Languages: Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, Go, SQL
Frontend: React, Next.js, Tailwind CSS, HTML5
Backend: Node.js, Express, FastAPI, GraphQL, REST APIs
Databases: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch
Cloud & DevOps: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda), Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, GitHub Actions
Testing: Jest, Cypress, Pytest, TDD
`
Rules:
- •Be honest — you may be tested in interviews on anything you list
- •Use the exact tool names from the job description (React vs ReactJS, Node vs Node.js)
- •Include version or level if relevant (AWS Solutions Architect — Associate)
- •Don't list things you used once in a tutorial five years ago
Work Experience: The Bullet Formula
Every bullet should follow: Action verb + what you built/changed + measurable impact
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Worked on the API | Redesigned REST API endpoints, reducing average response time from 1.2s to 180ms (85% improvement) across 40M daily requests |
| Helped with infrastructure | Led migration from EC2 monolith to containerised microservices on EKS, reducing deployment time from 4 hours to 12 minutes |
| Fixed bugs | Identified and resolved memory leak causing daily crashes, improving uptime from 97.1% to 99.8% |
| Worked on the frontend | Built a real-time dashboard in React + WebSockets serving 15,000 concurrent users at peak load |
Strong action verbs for engineers:
Architected, Built, Designed, Engineered, Implemented, Optimised, Refactored, Migrated, Automated, Deployed, Reduced, Increased, Integrated, Led
Numbers that impress engineering hiring managers:
- •Performance: response times (ms), latency reduction (%), uptime (%)
- •Scale: requests/second, users, data volume (GB/TB)
- •Efficiency: deployment frequency, time saved, test coverage (%)
- •Business: cost reduction (£/$), revenue impact, error rate reduction
Projects Section
For junior engineers, this section can be more important than work experience. For senior engineers, it demonstrates initiative beyond your day job.
Include:
- •Project name and one-line description
- •Technologies used
- •Link to GitHub or live demo
- •1–2 impact bullets
Example:
`
OpenCV Attendance Tracker | github.com/yourname/attendance-tracker
Facial recognition attendance system built with Python, OpenCV, and FastAPI.
• Processes 30 faces/second with 97.3% accuracy on a consumer GPU
• Used by 3 secondary schools in a pilot programme, tracking 1,200 students
`
What to Leave Out
Skill bars (Python ████░░ 4/5) — meaningless and ATS-invisible. Use categories and explicit tool names instead.
Outdated technologies — IE6 compatibility, jQuery from 2010, or tools clearly not on the job description add noise.
Every tool you've ever touched — be strategic. Match your skills to the job description.
Generic responsibilities — "Attended daily standups" is not a CV bullet.
ATS and the Software Engineer CV
Software engineering roles are highly competitive and most are filtered by ATS before a recruiter sees them. Key ATS checks for engineers:
- •Is your stack listed in the same terminology as the job description?
- •Are cloud providers and specific services listed (AWS vs "cloud")?
- •Do section headings use standard terms (Work Experience, not "What I've Built")?
- •Is your CV in single-column format? (Two-column breaks ATS parsing)
FixerCV's free ATS check scores your CV against the specific role's job description and shows you every missing keyword in 60 seconds.
