Europass CV: When to Use It, When to Avoid It, and Is It ATS-Friendly?
The Europass CV is the EU's free standard CV format. Use it when an employer, university or programme asks for it; for most private-sector jobs a clean single-column CV does better. Here's how to decide.
Short answer: the Europass CV is the European Union's free, standardised CV format. Use it when an employer, university or programme asks for it. For most private-sector jobs, a clean CV in your own layout does better: it is shorter, easier to tailor and doesn't look the same as every other applicant's.
What Is a Europass CV?
Europass is a set of free tools from the European Union, available at europass.europa.eu. The best known is the CV editor: you fill in a profile once (experience, education, languages, skills) and generate CVs from it in a standard layout, in any of the languages the platform supports.
Two features make it recognisable:
- •A fixed structure, so every Europass CV presents the same sections in a similar way
- •Language skills on the CEFR scale (A1 to C2), which employers across Europe understand

Fix My CV FreeWhen You Should Use It
| Situation | Use Europass? |
|---|---|
| The job ad or application form asks for a Europass CV | Yes |
| Applications to EU-funded programmes, traineeships and exchanges that request it | Yes |
| University or scholarship applications that specify it | Yes |
| Public-sector or agency roles where it is the stated format | Yes |
| Private-sector jobs with no format mentioned | Usually no — use your own CV |
| Jobs in the UK, Ireland or the US | No |
The rule is simple: follow the instructions. If the advert names Europass, send Europass. If it doesn't, you are free to choose, and your own layout is normally the stronger option.
When to Avoid It
It runs long. The layout uses a lot of space, so a career that fits on two pages in your own format can stretch to four in Europass.
It looks like everyone else's. A recruiter who sees the same template all day has to work harder to find what is different about you.
It is harder to tailor. A strong CV leads with whatever matters most for one specific job. A fixed section order makes that difficult.
It isn't the local convention everywhere. UK recruiters expect a two-page CV in your own layout (see the UK CV format). German employers are used to a tabular Lebenslauf (see the Germany CV format). Dutch employers prefer something short and direct (see the Netherlands CV format).
Is the Europass CV ATS-Friendly?
Partly. A Europass PDF contains real text rather than an image, so applicant tracking systems can read it. The problem is the layout: labels on one side and content on the other is not the structure most commercial parsers are built around, so job titles, employers and dates can end up in the wrong fields. Results vary from one system to another.
If you are applying through a company careers portal, a single-column CV with standard headings is the safer choice. Read more in how to make your CV ATS-friendly, or see how applications are handled by specific systems in our ATS guides.
Europass CV vs a Standard CV
| Europass CV | Your own CV | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Fixed, standardised | Your choice — ideally single column |
| Typical length | Often 3 or more pages | 2 pages |
| Tailoring | Limited | Full control over order and emphasis |
| Language levels | CEFR grid built in | Add them yourself (worth doing) |
| Best for | Applications that request it | Most private-sector jobs |
| ATS parsing | Inconsistent | Reliable with a simple layout |
If You Have to Use Europass: 6 Ways to Make It Stronger
- Choose the simplest template the editor offers, and avoid heavy colour or graphics.
- Delete empty sections. Don't leave headings with nothing under them.
- Write achievements, not duties. "Reduced invoice processing time from 5 days to 2" beats "Responsible for invoices".
- Keep it to two pages where you can, by cutting older and less relevant roles down to one line each.
- Use the job ad's wording for skills and tools, so a recruiter searching by keyword finds you.
- Be honest about language levels. The CEFR grid is specific, and interviews will test it.
Converting a Europass CV into a Standard CV
- Copy your content into a single-column document with these headings: Profile, Work Experience, Education, Skills, Languages.
- Replace the long personal information block with one line: name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn.
- Add a three or four line profile at the top, written for the job you want.
- Turn each role into three to five bullet points that start with a verb and end with a result.
- Keep your CEFR language levels; they are useful anywhere in Europe.
- Adjust for the country you are applying to. Our [CV format by country](/cv-format) guides cover what each market expects.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use a Europass CV?
Use it when the job ad, university or programme asks for it. For most private-sector jobs, a clean CV you've written and laid out yourself is the better choice, because it is shorter, easier to tailor and doesn't look identical to every other applicant's.
Is the Europass CV ATS-friendly?
Partly. Europass PDFs contain real text, so an ATS can read them, but the label-and-content layout isn't what most commercial parsers are built around, and results vary. A single-column CV with standard headings parses more reliably.
Is the Europass CV free?
Yes. The Europass CV editor is a free tool from the European Union at europass.europa.eu. You can build a profile, create CVs from it and download them as PDF.
Do I need a Europass CV for a job or visa in Europe?
Not in general. Individual employers, universities and EU programmes may ask for one, so follow the instructions in the advert or application guide. If they don't mention Europass, you are free to use your own format.
Do UK or German employers accept a Europass CV?
They will usually accept it, but it is not what they expect. UK recruiters prefer a two-page CV in your own layout, and German employers are used to a tabular Lebenslauf.
