What Is a Good ATS Score? (And What It Really Measures)
A good ATS score is usually 75 or above on a checker's 0–100 scale. But employers never see that number. Here's what an ATS score measures, why it changes with every job ad, and how to raise it.
Short answer: on a 0–100 checker scale, 75 or above is a good ATS score for a specific job. But the number comes from the checking tool, not from the employer. No recruiter ever sees it. What it tells you is how well your CV matches a job ad and how cleanly software can read it.
What an ATS Score Actually Is
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software employers use to collect and manage applications. Recruiters search it, filter it and read CVs inside it. In most systems, candidates are not given a score.
An "ATS score" comes from a CV checker. It is an estimate of two things:
- •Match — how many of the job ad's skills, tools and qualifications appear on your CV
- •Readability — whether your layout, headings and file type can be parsed without losing information
So the score is a practice test, not an exam result. It predicts how easy you are to find and how quickly a recruiter can see the fit.

Fix My CV FreeScore Ranges and What They Mean
This is how FixerCV's score reads. Other checkers use different formulas, so compare scores from the same tool only.
| Score | Label | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| 75–100 | Good | Format parses cleanly and most of the job's key terms are present. Polish and apply. |
| 50–74 | Needs work | Readable, but important keywords are missing or your bullets describe duties instead of results. |
| Below 50 | Poor | Several must-have terms are missing, or the layout is breaking the parse. Fix before applying. |
Why the Same CV Gets Different Scores
Different jobs. A score is always relative to a job ad. A CV that scores 80 for one marketing role can score 45 for another that asks for different tools.
With and without a job ad. A general check looks at overall quality. A check against a job ad is stricter, because it measures you against that employer's specific list. Expect the number to drop, and treat the drop as a to-do list.
Different checkers. Each tool weighs keywords, formatting and content differently. A 70 on one is not the same as a 70 on another.
How to Raise Your Score
- Check against the actual job ad, not in general. Use a keyword extractor to see exactly what the ad asks for.
- Add the missing must-have terms that genuinely describe your experience, using the employer's wording.
- Put keywords in context. A skill inside an achievement bullet counts for more than the same word in a list. The bullet point generator can help.
- Fix the format. Single column, standard headings, no tables or text inside images. See how to make a CV ATS-friendly.
- Re-check. Run the CV again after your changes to confirm what moved.
What an ATS Score Doesn't Tell You
- •Whether you are the strongest candidate. It measures match, not merit.
- •Whether you will pass the employer's screening questions on eligibility, licences or location. Those are the most common automatic filter; see our guides to specific ATS platforms.
- •Whether a recruiter will like what they read. Clear, specific achievements still decide that.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good ATS score?
On FixerCV's 0–100 scale, 75 or above is a good score for a specific job, and other checkers use a similar rule of thumb. 50 to 74 means the CV needs work, and below 50 means recruiters searching for that role are unlikely to find it.
Do employers see my ATS score?
No. The score comes from the checker you used, not from the employer's system. Most applicant tracking systems don't give candidates a score at all; recruiters search, filter and read applications inside them.
Is 70 a good ATS score?
It is close. A 70 usually means the format is fine and a few important keywords from the job ad are missing. Adding the ones that genuinely match your experience is normally enough to move it above 75.
Why did my score drop when I added a job description?
Without a job ad, a checker scores general quality. With one, it compares your CV against that job's specific requirements, which is a tougher and more useful test. The lower number shows what that employer is looking for and you haven't yet mentioned.
Should I aim for a score of 100?
No. Chasing 100 leads to keyword stuffing, which reads badly to the recruiter who opens your CV. Aim for 75 or higher with every keyword backed by real experience.
