India Resume Format: What Recruiters Expect

Indian recruiters screen high volumes of applications, usually through Naukri, LinkedIn and company portals, so a resume that is short, keyword-accurate and easy to skim does best. Much of the personal detail that older Indian resume formats carried is no longer expected.

Length

1 page for freshers and early-career candidates; 2 pages once you have several years of experience.

Photo

Not needed for most corporate roles. Add one only if the job ad asks for it.

Include

  • Phone number, professional email, city and LinkedIn profile
  • A short professional summary (or a career objective if you are a fresher)
  • Notice period or earliest joining date — recruiters filter on it
  • Education with institution, year and CGPA or percentage, especially in your first few years
  • Projects, internships and certifications if you are a fresher
  • Technical skills listed by their exact names

Leave out

  • Father's name, date of birth, marital status, religion and full home address
  • A signed declaration at the end — modern employers don't expect it
  • Current and expected CTC on the resume itself (give them when a recruiter or form asks)
  • A generic career objective copied from a template

India-specific tips

Freshers: lead with projects and internships

Without work experience, your projects, internships and coursework are the evidence. Describe what you built or did, the tools you used and the result, not just the title.

Put your notice period where it can be seen

Recruiters often shortlist by availability. 'Notice period: 30 days' or 'Immediate joiner' near the top saves a phone call.

Use the job description's keywords

Job portals and recruiters search by skill and designation. Use the same names for tools and technologies that the posting uses, and keep your portal profile consistent with your resume.

Quantify with real numbers

Replace 'worked on testing' with what you actually delivered: how many test cases, how much time saved, the size of the team or user base. Only use numbers you can explain in an interview.

Keep the format simple

A single-column layout with standard headings parses reliably on job portals. Avoid tables, text boxes and skill bars.

FAQ

What is the best resume format for freshers in India?

One page in reverse-chronological order: contact details, a short career objective, skills, projects and internships, education with CGPA or percentage, and certifications.

Should I include a declaration in my resume?

No. The signed declaration is a holdover from older formats and modern employers don't expect it. Use the space for projects or achievements.

Should I put a photo and date of birth on an Indian resume?

Neither is needed for most corporate roles. Include them only if the job ad asks.
